When a refrigerator isn’t cold, it’s time to figure out what the problem could be. A lot of times it is something as common as a good coil cleaning. However, with latest fridges, they are manufactured with various sensors too.
Before we investigate further, we look at the most common and easy reasons for this problem. Here are some things that we have found can lead to a refrigerator not cooling:
Is the cord plugged in? This may seem like a odd question, but we have been hired for appointments that this was the reason for the problem. Somehow, it was not plugged in. Maybe a a pet did it, or an electrician while doing a project. Whatever the reason might be, make sure it is plugged in.
Check the thermostat inside of the unit. This is a very typical problem for anyone with children in the house. After all, kids are fascinated with buttons and dials and so, without understanding they are doing anything wrong, they mess with them. So, check that the thermostat temperature is not the reason for the warm refrigerator.
Be sure the vents in the freezer area aren’t blocked with containers or food. This is very common because sometimes frozen vegetables get jammed in the back. There might be food in the way back of a freezer unit that has been forgotten about.
Be sure the refrigerator’s condenser cooling fan is clean and clear of all debris. To do this, unplug the refrigerator and pull it out from the wall. The cooling fan for several models is right at the bottom or in the back part of the freezer section. A lot of times, homeowner do not think about cleaning this section of the appliance. But, it’s important to clean it. And, it piles up with dust and fuzz quickly, especially with houses that have cats and dogs. So, find a clean rag and get the collected dust out of the coils and cooling fan.
This is not suggested for refrigerators that have a rear coil system. Once all clean, plug it back into the outlet and notice if the cooling fan moves.
There are a few more reasons for a refrigerator not cooling after these more common ones to start to take a look at if your freezer is cold but your fridge isn’t. The evaporator coils have frost on them. This occurs if there is a failure in the defrost heating system. Or when the automatic defrost experiences a problem. The evaporator fan motor can be another cause.
Every fridge has a set of evaporator coils. These evaporator coils are what gets cold and then the fan circulates the cold air around inside the appliance. The damper control assembly working the right way. The temperature control board which provides the electricity to the fan and compressor, this probably is not the issue but it’s worth mentioning.
And, the thermistor might be malfunctioning, which is a small sensor inside the appliance that tells the temperature. Having one of our technicians inspect it is the best course of action but these are a few of of the most common issues.
